WUD Film

During my final year at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, my team and I were tasked with the design and implementation of a movie showing app for the Wisconsin Union Directorate, a student-driven body responsible for hosting events and gatherings for the university community.

User Driven Design Goals

The goal of this project was to design and develop a working prototype of a fast, lightweight app that could display timings for movies hosted by the Wisconsin Union Directorate Film Committee.

The target user group consisted of undergraduate and graduate students, and so we decided to pursue a design that maintained the familiarity these users were accustomed to with other movie apps, such as Fandango, IMDB, and Rotten Tomato.

Our app did not necessitate users to create accounts to be able to view movie listings shown by the Wisconsin Union Directorate, so we opted for the main view of our app to show movie listings right away. We designed a scrollable view in which we would load views of movie listings, with all necessary information, such as poster image, plot summary, IMDB and Rotten Tomato ratings, along with upcoming showtimes. The top navigation bar consists of an Email icon and a Settings icon. The email view design is discussed below, and the settings view design is discussed below that.

One of the requirements our clients gave us for the app was to provide users an option to subscribe for email notifications on movie listings and events. Therefore, we designed a minimalist email submission form, that allows users to submit their email addresses if they so wished, to recieve notifications.

We also designed a Settings page, so that users would feel a sense of personalization with our application since there were no authenticated user profiles. Another purpose of this design was to have a place to hold all of the legal documents and disclaimers from the WUD Film Committee.
